Garage flooring covers a cold, dusty concrete slab with a surface that takes tyres, tools and footsteps. The choice here falls into three groups: rubber rolls you cut to length, interlocking garage floor tiles, and loose mats for one part of the floor.
Rubber rolls come 3mm to 5mm thick and 1m to 2m wide, in coin, checker, smooth, willow and ribbed tops, with many listings sold up to 15m long. Two or three strips cover a typical single garage, and a thin roll is usually the lowest-cost way to cover the whole floor. The 8mm hammertop roll, sold as a 2m x 3m piece, is thicker for heavier use.
Garage floor tiles let you cover the floor in sections and replace a damaged piece on its own. The vented modular tiles are 400mm x 400mm polypropylene tiles in five colours, sold singly or in packs covering 4 to 28 square metres. Interlocking rubber tiles of 90cm x 90cm are softer, and suit a garage that doubles as a gym or workshop. Interlocking floor tiles compares tile formats in more depth.
If you only need to protect the parking space or a bench area, loose mats are quicker to fit. Garage floor mats include heavy 6ft x 4ft rubber mats and pre-cut pieces such as a 3m x 1.8m coin roll, while the workbench protector mat sits on the bench itself.
Garage flooring sits within residential flooring. A garage used every day for repairs and fabrication will be better served by rubber workshop flooring.
